Geography of India
Ganges and Indus River
Ganges River:
"The Ganges river is the great river of the plains of northern India." It starts in the Himalaya Mountains, and flows across most of northern India. It runs through rocks, ice, valleys and mountains. "The Ganges River plains have good water supplies from melting ice carried down from the Himalayas." "Also, this river can flood and destroy cops planted along its banks, during the rainy season."It is the holy river of Hinduism. The southern surface of the Ganges delta has been formed by loads of sediment. As the Ganges River passes through the plains, it leaves sediment behind. To the east the seaward side of the delta is being changed at a rapid rate by the formation of new lands, and new islands as a result of this. Therefore, the northern plains contain some of the most fertile farmland in the world.
Indus River:
The Indus River starts in the Himalaya Mountains, and flows through India, Pakistan, and China. Since the river is along mountains, it will get water from melting snow. "The melting snow and ice keep the water level of the river high." The Indus River collects some of the best farmland in the world, it carries sediment from the mountains towards the plains similar to the Ganges River. The Indus is an important source of water for farmland. Also, the towns along its banks receive up to 20 inches of rain a year. The Indus has many aquatic organisms, it receives a lot of sewage from cities too.
