Prince Siddhartha

I. Early Years
a. Prince Siddhartha was born in 563 B.C.E to Queen Maya and King Suddhodana, near the Himalaya Mountains.
b. The Brahmins said, in the future, he would rule the universe, or he would become a buddha.
c. "The people around Siddhartha knew he was special from the moment he was born."
d. He began his life by taking a few steps and said "I am the leader of the world and the guide to the world".
II. Significant Events
a. At age 16, Siddhartha married a noble woman, and at age 29 they had a son
b. During three trips, the prince discovered three forms of suffering, aging, sickness, and death.
c. Siddhartha gave up his old life, his royal life, and wanted to find deep truth and being free of suffering. He met other ascetics just like him, and Siddhartha became an expert on meditation. This search for enlightenment led him to a life of an ascetic.
d. Siddhartha found enlightenment and became the Buddha.
III. Personal Attributes
a. Siddhartha's attributes were he was determined to find enlightenment, and he wouldn't stop till he found it.
b. He was compassionate and humble because he was able to give up his riches and live a poor life as an ascetic

V. My Impressions
a. My impression of Siddhartha was that it was inspiring to see how someone could give up so much.
b. He is a role model on our society, and how we should live a humble life.
c. He shows us how to be content with ourselves, and be free of sorrow.
d. Siddhartha was very wise to go through countless journeys to find his enlightenment.

King Ashoka
I. Early Years
a. King Ashoka was born in 304 B.C.E to emperor Bindusara, who ruled for 25 years
b. King Ashoka expanded the empire nearly all of the Indian subcontinent
c. Ashoka was appointed viceroy at 18 years old
d. Ashoka got married at age 20.
II. Significant Events
a. He sent his son, Mahinda to Ceylon, a large island, and he converted the king to Buddhism.
b. Ashoka embraced Buddhism and gave up hunting and became a strict vegetarian.
c. After one brutal battle, he changed, and he decided that he would never again use violence.
III. Personal Attributes
a. King Ashoka was merciful and loving by banning violence, and he wanted respect for others, so he treated everyone respectfully. He wanted to never fight another kingdom.
b. He had a high tolerance because he allowed many other religions, not just Buddhism.
c. He was determined to create a strong united empire.
IV. Contributions
a. Ashoka had edicts carved into walls, and tall pillars so many people would see them. He used them to promote the Buddha's teachings. They also promoted people's well-being.
b. He created medical care for all people and animals
c. King Ashoka banned animal sacrifices because he was concerned for living things
d. He urged people to follow a vegetarian diet.
V. My Impressions

b. He established the Mauryan Empire by defeating Dhana Nanda of Nanda Empire at age 20.
c. He was taught by Chanakya and he taught him about war and politics.
d. As a young child, he had the features of a successful ruler.
II. Significant Events
a. He united the northern kingdoms through war
b. At the age of 42, he handed his throne to Bindusara.
c. He traveled to Southern India and meditated without eating or drinking till his death. (Sallekhana)
d. He won the battle between Alexander the Great.
III. Personal Attributes
a. Chandragupta was very successful because he unified India.
b. He was also very smart, and his plans were strategical. This is why he was able to unite India.

a. The Guptas were very smart, and their plans were too. Their ruling strategy helped them to stay in power for 230 years.
b. The Guptas were very clever and successful because they had so many achievements in various fields.
c. The Gupta family was very intelligent, because they performed many tasks that today we can't even do, such as metalwork.

a. The use of math allowed ancient Indians to build many complex buildings such as temples.
b. "Until the Gupta empire, people believed the world was flat."A man named Aryabhatta stopped this. From their many calculations, an astronomer was able to orbit the sun very closely.
c. The Guptas created sculptures out of wood, stone, bronze, and terra-cotta clay.
d. The Gupta family created a governement to oversee the empire.
